Adjustable hybrid diffractive/refractive achromatic lens

چکیده
We demonstrate a variable focal length achromatic lens that consists of a flat liquid crystal diffractive lens and a pressure-controlled fluidic refractive lens. The diffractive lens is composed of a flat binary Fresnel zone structure and a thin liquid crystal layer, producing high efficiency and millisecond switching times while applying a low ac voltage input. The focusing power of the diffractive lens is adjusted by electrically modifying the sub-zones and re-establishing phase wrapping points. The refractive lens includes a fluid chamber with a flat glass surface and an opposing elastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane surface. Inserting fluid volume through a pump system into the clear aperture region alters the membrane curvature and adjusts the refractive lens' focal position. Primary chromatic aberration is remarkably reduced through the coupling of the fluidic and diffractive lenses at selected focal lengths. Potential applications include miniature color imaging systems, medical and ophthalmic devices, or any design that utilizes variable focal length achromats.

Achromatic waveguide lenses.
An investigation of the chromatic properties of waveguide lenses is described. In general, the focal length of mode-index and Fresnel zone (diffractive) lenses will be a function of wavelength. As a result, these lenses will have high optical quality over only a relatively small wavelength range. A method is given to correct for this chromatic dispersion by forming a hybrid mode-index/diffracti...
متن کاملDesign and imaging performance of achromatic diffractive-refractive x-ray and gamma-ray Fresnel lenses.
Achromatic combinations of a diffractive phase Fresnel lens and a refractive correcting element have been proposed for x-ray and gamma-ray astronomy and for microlithography, but considerations of absorption often dictate that the refractive component be given a stepped profile, resulting in a double Fresnel lens. The imaging performance of corrected Fresnel lenses, with and without stepping, i...
متن کاملRefractive and diffractive properties of planar micro-optical elements.
The refractive and the diffractive properties of planar micro-optical elements are investigated. The transition between purely refractive and purely diffractive planar microlenses is numerically simulated for the example of differently designed phase-matched Fresnel elements. Results obtained from numerical simulations and experiments show that the refractive and diffractive types exhibit a dis...
متن کاملVisual axial PSF of diffractive trifocal lenses.
The ophthalmic applications of a diffractive trifocal lens design with adjustable add powers and light distribution in the foci are investigated. Axial PSFs of the trifocal lenses are calculated and analyzed as a function of the design parameters and the eye pupil size. The optical performance in actual eyes is also simulated by including the measured ocular wave aberration functions of human e...
متن کاملComparison of low-vision reading with spectacle-mounted magnifiers.
Reading is the most common goal among persons with age-related macular degeneration and other retinal diseases that lead to macular loss, as well as the functional task most affected by the resulting central scotomas. This project determined whether reading ability is different when persons with macular loss read with a new hybrid-diffractive spectacle magnifier versus a refractive-aspheric spe...
